Golf Course on Fort Wainwright

Some of the harshest weather occurs at Forts Wainwright and Greely placing them among the most challenging training and living environments in the United States. Despite harsh conditions, the area is located in one of the most beautiful natural settings. To meet the challenges and take advantage of the areas natural beauty, the U.S. Army formed a partnership with Actus Lend Lease to finance, develop, build, renovate and maintain the posts 1,800 homes in July 2007. The partnership is known as North Haven Communities.

North Haven is home to 1/25th Stryker Brigade and Ft. Wainwright Soldiers are part of an elite group which encompasses the Army’s farthest North and only Arctic Stryker Brigade Combat Team. Ninety miles away is Ft. Greely where a Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD) program is operated by the 49th Missile Defense Battalion.

More than 1,500 Soldiers and their families make their home at North Haven, and the partnership is working to create an environment they will enjoy and thrive in. A new community center at Greely is under development, which will serve as primary gathering place for families. The center’s log cabin-style design will create a sense of place and provide a warm and inviting atmosphere for families. A large fireplace surrounded by a comfortable seating area, a playroom, fitness center and ice skating rink are among the amenities families will enjoy.

Since Wainwright and Greely see just one to two hours of daylight during the winter months there are some concerns about seasonal affective disorder. To address the well-being of families, special attention will be given to home design. Bright colors, natural lighting, full-spectrum lighting in bathrooms and kitchens, and spacious living areas are part of the plans, and homes will be built to be energy-efficient and maximize solar energy.

North Haven Communities also is committed to sustaining the local economy. Dozens of new jobs have been created and several local and small businesses from the area have been solicited, resulting in a significant financial contribution to the surrounding and greater community.
