Fort Campbell Family Housing Employee Helps Build “Extreme” Home
Maintenance Technician works on home for ABC “Extreme Makeover”

This was not the first time ABC’s Extreme Makeover Home Edition chose the Clarksville, TN area as its location for a new home, and it wasn’t the first time Alan Arms, a Maintenance Teach for Fort Campbell Family Housing (FCFH,) was asked to help work on the home either. Arms, formerly owned his own sheetrock hanging business and after his work on the first Makeover home he and his old crew were called back to help with the latest one. “There were about 25 other (sheetrock) hangers working at the same time,” Arms said.

According to Arms, to hang all of the sheetrock in a house the same size of the Makeover home it would typically take two days, however crews completed that task in less than a day. On top of working with 25 other crews, Arms and his team had to contend with the almost 300 people working on other aspects of the home. “It got kind of cramped with the other crews and workers. We also had cameras and other elements of the show to work around.”

Arms took a personal day to help out at the home. “The house is just down the road from my own home, so it was an easy drive,” Arms said. “Besides I was glad to help on such a neat project.”

This year’s home was built for the family of a Clarksville Police Officer killed in the line of duty in 2002 and took five days to complete. The reveal featured thousands of well wishers cheering for the family. Recording artist Usher was also present as a special guest.
