Fort Hood Family Housing Completes Construction On Newest LEED Community
Fort Hood Family Housing and Actus Lend Lease recently completed construction on the installation’s newest sustainable community. 232 homes built to the US Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) for Homes Silver certification standards were completed in the Patton Park and Wainwright communities, making it the largest number of LEED –Silver certified homes in the state of Texas and in the Department of the Army.
“The impact we are having on the environment is substantial,” says Project Director, Mack Quinney. “According to Energy Star, construction completed in 2009 alone will save an estimated $56,000 annually on utility bills.”
Currently, 127 homes have received certification with the remaining 105 anticipated to be awarded in the near future. LEED features in the homes include: superior insulation levels, low e-3 windows, low flow fixtures, dual flush toilets, and fresh-air ventilation by use of recycled materials. In addition to LEED certification, the homes have also been awarded Energy Star qualified home status. Other initiatives such as proper disposal of waste construction and management of recycling have been instrumental to the program’s success.
“Innovative techniques such as on-site separation and good planning has proven very successful and worthwhile as evidenced by the diversion of 62 percent of waste or 3,318 tons from landfills”, says LEED Project Team Leader Manager, Cody Stringer
Fort Hood Family Housing’s participation in the LEED program began under the pilot program in 2007. LEED certification provides third-party assurance to homebuyers that their homes comply with the rigorous technical requirements for energy and water efficiency, indoor air quality, non-toxic materials and environmental performance. media
